Icon Photographer Art Anderson was one of the first campers in the Dunes. He tied a canvas to his Model-T Ford and held his makeshift tent with two sticks.

Icon The South Shore Line worked closely with the Indiana State Park Commission to protect the Dunes area from industrialization by establishing the 2,000-acre Indiana Dunes State Park.

Icon After the Chicago, Lake Shore and South Bend Railway was sold to Insull's Midland Utilities in 1925, both Insull and the South Shore Line supported the development of the Indiana Dunes State Park by donating land for the park entrance and funding a hotel, bathing facilities, pier and dance pavilion. The proposed rail terminal was never built, but its proposed alignment is now the extension of Indiana State Road 49 into the state park.

Icon Beverly Shore’s first beachside home was built in 1929 and was designed in Mediterranean Revival style, similiar to Florida resorts.

Icon Fredrick Bartlett developed Beverly Shores by employing salesmen to comb South Chicago’s ethnic neighborhoods for relatively affluent individuals interested in escaping their crowded industrial environment. Interested parties were transported to Beverly Shores on daily South Shore trains that were specially painted in red, white and blue and labeled “Bartlett Specials.” After the tour of the resort, a complimentary meal and free drinks were alleged to boost the sale of property.

Icon Only 25 houses were constructed in Beverly Shores before 1935. Before establishment, Beverly Shores was a complex environment of sandy beaches and dunes, swampy marshes and dense woods. Frederick Bartlett named his new town after his daughter, Beverly. The Beverly Shores Inn was built in 1933 and cost $100,000 to construct.
